  • The Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce Business Awards recognize business/organizations that have demonstrated outstanding achievement and contribution to the Wood Buffalo region while having developed business acumen & management practices to ensure long term sustainability. 

    The Community Awards recognize citizens and groups who have made a positive impact on the region and continue to work to make Wood Buffalo the best place to live, work, and play,

    Business Awards

    Business Awards Eligibility Criteria

    • Demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or profession
    • Provides valuable service by devoting time and energy to improving the quality of life for others in the community
    • Nominees must have an active business located or operating within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
    • Nominees must have been in business for more than 2 years as of August 31 of the award calendar year
    • Nominees must hold a valid business license
    • Nominees are permitted to apply for awards in successive years
       

    Award Descriptions:

    1. Business of the Year
    The purpose of this award is to recognize a Wood Buffalo business employing 21+ people which has made an outstanding contribution in the combined areas of business success, innovation and community service.

    • Nominees must be an independently owned and operated business with 21 or more full time employees.

    2. Small Business of the Year
    This award is designed to recognize a Wood Buffalo business employing up to 6-20 people which has made an outstanding contribution in the combined area of business success, innovation and community service.

    • Nominess must be an independently owned and operated business with not more than 6-20 full time employees.

    3. Micro-Business of the Year
    The purpose of this award is to recognize a Wood Buffalo business employing up to 5 people which has made an outstanding contribution in the combined area of business success, innovation and community service.

    • Nominees must be an independently owned and operated business with not more than 5 full time employees.

    4. Aboriginal Business of the Year

    Recognizes an aboriginally owned and operated company that has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the Wood Buffalo business community.

    • Nominees must be an aboriginally owned and operated business within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

    5. Artpreneur 

    Award Partnership between the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce and the Wood Buffalo Arts Council

    The Artpreneur Award recognizes individual artists, crafts people, and arts-based business which have made an outstanding contribution in the combined areas of business success, innovation, and community services, and have added value to the local creative economy.

    Non-profit organizations are not be eligible to apply.

    6. Female Business Leader of the Year

    This is a businesswoman who demonstrates leadership and vision; continually invests in the development and growth of herself and those around her; and consistently gives to her community.

    • Nominees must be a business owner within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo or be employed by a business in the Region whose contributions have positively impacted the business.

    1. Leader of Tomorrow Award
    The Leader of Tomorrow Award is presented to an individual between the age of 18-25 at the time of nomination, who has shown commitment and genuine care for the community through their volunteerism and community participation. Their contributions to the volunteer sector in our Region have made it a better place to live and their continued support will provide the inspiration and drive to both future and present generations.

    • Must be between the ages of 18-25 at the time of nomination
    • Has shown commitment and genuine care for the community through their volunteerism and community participation

    2. Sustainable Community Recognition Award
    The Sustainable Community Recognition Award is given to someone who strives to contribute to sustainable community in their every day efforts. Through their contributions they have made our Region a better place for everyone to live. This award will be presented to a citizen, business owner, or corporation who actively works towards making our community an even friendlier, safer and more responsive place to live. The Sustainable Community Recognition Award identifies those who have a concern for the needs of others, going above and beyond the call the duty with little or no concern for financial gain.

    3. X-ceptional Kids Award
    The X-ceptional Kids Award is given to one individual in each age category (9-13 or 14-17) who has shown care and involvement throughout the community in ways that make them truly X-ceptional. By expressing their character through actions of heroism, courage, and outstanding citizenship, they are able to provide prime examples to their peers and the people around them. 

    • Given to one individual in each age category: 9-13 years and 14-17 years at the time of nomination
    • Has shown care and involvement throughout the community in ways that make them truly X-ceptional

    4. Public Service Award of Excellence
    The Public Service Award is designed to recognize outstanding achievement, not programs, in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Public Service.  These are people who have extended themselves, whether in creating a whole new way of delivering a service, developing time and money-saving technology, or showing extraordinary professionalism and care in performing their daily tasks.   

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Must be a government employee
    • Demonstrates exceptional work performance
    • Provides service beyond clients's expectations, looks to understand the needs of the client and recommends actions to address these needs
    • Accomplishes results beyond normal expectations which support government and/or departmental priorities
    • Increases client satisfaction by providing consistent, high quality reliable service; is accessible to the client; provides efficiently timed responses and is willing to go the extra mile
    • Displays respect, consideration and overall helpfulness that goes far beyond the norm in the performance of daily duties
       

    Examples of Innovation:

    • Uses original and creative ideas to make improvements and/or develop an initiate new approaches
    • Improves performance by doing things that may be unique, leading-edge, or new to the public sector
    • Acts in a way which generates breakthrough ideas, fresh perspectives and new opportunities
    • Achieves cost and/or time saves (or both) in the short and/or long term
    • Changes the organizational culture or traditional approach to management or problem solving
